True connection: It’s not about control

At Hosanna Horse Haven, we talk a lot about connection — but not the kind many people are used to seeing.
In many traditional barns, horses are trained to respond quickly and quietly, to obey without question. And while that might look like good behavior on the outside, too often, it’s actually a shut-down response. The spark in the horse’s eye is gone. They’ve learned to go through the motions, not because they trust — but because they’ve given up.
That’s not connection. That’s compliance.
Here, we believe in something deeper. We focus on ground-based connection because that’s where communication begins — with presence, curiosity, and mutual respect. Before we ever ask a horse to “do” something, we ask: Do they feel safe? Seen? Heard?
Our horses get to choose.
They choose to stay with us.
To engage.
To explore the relationship.
This is where true healing happens — for both horse and human.
We don’t need reins or saddles to find connection.
We just need an open heart, quiet hands, and the patience to listen.
